ALISON has been around for a couple of years now. It started out providing free ICT learning materials based on the ECDL curriculum. This has been replaced recently by their ABC materials. But they have also added a lot more courses including courses on Financial Literacy, Health & Safety, Health, and Personal Development & Soft Skills. It is looking to provide more courses in Enterprise & Business Skills, Leadership and even Teacher Training. The latest course is about HIV/Aids.
And it is all free to the learner. How do they do it?
ALISON can offer free learning because advertising is displayed throughout the Web site. When a learner clicks on an advertisement, they earn revenue. That revenue is then shared with content publishers. Also fees are charged for the use of ALISON Manager, the service which allows for the creation and monitoring of learner groups. Some of the learning available is sponsored by partner organisations who want to see learning on a particular subject freely available. Other content is provided by owners and developers of learning content who provide it at no charge and are seeking no monetary return. Others publishers earn a split on the revenue generated through the display of their content.
