Well the Trusthouse Foundation (who currently distribute over £1m per year) is worth a look, providing your organisation’s turnover is less than £300,000 per annum and the aims of your organisation lie within:
- Health Care and Disability
- Community Support
- Education and the Arts
Within the Community Support strand the foundation will consider applications in respect of:
- Community:
- the support of carers; projects in deprived communities;
- projects addressing financial exclusion
- the provision of sporting facilities or equipment in deprived areas
- Drugs and Alcohol: rehabilitation of substance and alcohol mis-users
- Elderly:
- projects addressing isolation and loneliness (e.g. befriending schemes);
- domiciliary support (e.g. respite for carers),
- residential improvements/adaptations
- Ex-offenders: projects working with prisoners and ex-offenders to improve their life skills and reduce re-offending
- Young People: projects which build the confidence, life skills and employment skills of young people in need.
How Much?
The Trustees received 827 applications during the yea 2005/06 and awarded 324 grants totalling £2.11m. Most of the grants were under £10,000, with an average value of £4,814
The Foundation offers grants under two separate programmes:
Small Grants Programme:
This offers grants under £10,000 only to organisations with annual incomes below £300,000 p.a.
- Grants are for one-off purposes within the priorities set out above and must be spent within six months of receipt;
- grants can be for one-off capital items, such as equipment or small capital works, or towards six months running costs;
- for requests of under £5,000, there is a programme to “fast track” the appeals so that applicants will know the outcome within six to eight weeks of receipt of the application;
Large Grants Programme:
This is available to all organisations of any size;
- offers grants of normally between £10,000 and £30,000 for capital projects only (i.e. equipment, building or capital works);
- capital grants will not normally be offered to very large capital projects (e.g. over £1m), but individual and discrete elements of very large projects may be considered when a significant proportion of the total appeal has already been raised
- Demand for larger grants is high:- at present only one in ten applications is successful so it is suggested by the foundation that consider applying for a small grant if your income is below £300k as you may stand more chance of success.
Deadline
The Trustees meet four times a year, at the beginning of February, May, September and November, to consider grant applications. Applications must be received at least eight weeks prior to a meeting in order to be considered at the next meeting.
